A2. Navigating the Diverse Landscape of Extension Education: Strategies for Successful Learning Materials
Wednesday December 4, 2024 2:45pm - 3:30pm EST
Track: Program & Project Development

Description: As Extension Educators, we serve a vast audience, spanning all age groups, educational and cultural backgrounds, and levels of expertise. Coping with such a variety of stakeholders requires us to draw on the experience we accrue over a lifetime of service. When available, seasoned educators can be a great resource when planning new programming or addressing a new audience, but sometimes it can be difficult to identify support or even to realize what you might need to know. This is especially true for newer educators, for whom every experience is as much about their own learning as it is for the learning of others. This presentation will discuss some key issues related to sharing expertise and targeting your audience that can help you to prepare more effective and engaging learning materials across different groups. We will introduce some familiar and not so familiar ideas for you to consider when planning to teach, and simple ways that can help ensure your teaching materials are supporting rather than detracting from your goals.

This session will equip participants with knowledge and skills to facilitate project-based learning opportunities focused on real-world challenges that build youth’s problem-solving and technical communication skills and introduce youth to STEM career pathways. Participants will work through abbreviated versions of a series of activities that guide students through the engineering design process, including identifying and understanding a problem; applying concepts and skills from multiple STEM disciplines to design, build, test, and optimize a solution; and communicating the design process and impacts of their solution. Adaptations of the core engineering design activity will be discussed to highlight the transdisciplinary nature of this framework for identifying and solving problems. These activities can be used as grab-and-go lessons or organized into a series culminating in a project.

Extension professionals can serve as connectors, educators, and project leaders in supporting this work, an important role often left unfilled. As a connector, Extension professionals might help farmers and school food directors understand the challenges and benefits of working together to put fresh, local foods on the school menu. Extension professionals might connect local Master Gardeners or volunteers to assist with school gardens. Extension professionals can also support formal learning in the classroom by leading agricultural or nutritional educational activities. Many Extension professionals are already playing an important role in the Farm to School, also known as, Indiana Grown for Schools, movement in their community. With this session, learn how you might increase your impact or begin the process of bringing these important activities to the schools in your county.

Track: Roundtable – Program & Project Development

Description: Purdue Extension has a long history of providing land use technical assistance resources and training for Indiana plan commissions. The Purdue Land Use Team collaborators develop and deliver robust information that informs local decision-makers based on a thorough understanding of the alternatives and consequences of land use planning decisions. Additionally, specialists and educators provide various levels of technical assistance. For example, program efforts include convening and coaching local working groups in collaboration with decision-making bodies to support local planning and ordinance development in housing, natural resources conservation, parks and public spaces, renewable energy, and septic systems, among others. Planning programs provide land use education through decision-support tools, facilitated discussions, and resource guides. Emphasis is on providing support for current land use pressures. As a result, Purdue Extension Community Development’s thematic area of Community Planning strongly focuses on renewable energy planning and zoning. Purdue Extension Community Development is leading the Renewable Energy Siting through Technical Engagement (R-STEP) program funded through the Department of Energy. This state-wide collaborative supports renewable energy education and technical assistance for planning and siting utility-scale projects. It additionally focuses on building collaborative partnerships, accessible education and training, and engagement experiences to support communities in reaching self-directed resiliency goals.

D1. Safe Sleep for All Communities
Thursday December 5, 2024 8:30am - 9:15am EST
Track: Program & Project Development

Description: Cass County, while rural, defies expectations with its impressive diversity. Home to Logansport Memorial Hospital (LMH), this county exemplifies a blend of cultures within its rural landscape. However, despite this diversity, the Logansport Memorial Hospital (LMH) has faced challenges in educating patients from various linguistic backgrounds about safe sleep practices. The changing demographics of Cass County, including a growing Hispanic and Haitian population, have highlighted the need for effective communication and education in these communities. Recognizing this gap, Purdue University’s Community Transformation Team played a pivotal role in fostering collaboration between Cass County Doulas from the Hispanic and Haitian communities and Logansport Memorial Hospital's Labor and Delivery nurses. Together, we created a culturally tailored Safe Sleep story with assistance from an outside vendor. This unique course, available in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole, utilizes a story-based approach to convey essential safe sleep information to new mothers and families in a language and format they understand. The course was developed iteratively, with continuous input and support. LMH collaboration with doulas and Purdue epitomizes an innovative framework for transcending linguistic and cultural barriers in healthcare education. As a vanguard of inclusive healthcare, the forthcoming Safe Sleep course presents a groundbreaking solution for delivering vital information to multifaceted populations. We plan to expand this transformative initiative to neighboring counties, with assistance from Purdue Extension, amplifying its potential to effect widespread positive change across Indiana.
