Marshall Stewart, a nationally recognized leader in higher education and university stakeholder engagement, joined Kansas State University in January 2023 as the university's senior vice president for executive affairs, university engagement and partnerships, and chief of staff.
In his role at K-State, Stewart serves as the president's lead liaison with university, government, and community leadership, working to facilitate strategic initiatives and partnerships with university, community, state, national and international effects. He leads and directs university wide engagement to strengthen the institution, increase economic impact and deliver on the promise to be the next-generation land-grant university.
The administrative staff from the Offices of the President and Government Relations, the Division of Communications and Marketing, Office of Engagement, Military and Veterans Affairs, McCain Auditorium, and the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art report to Stewart. He provides leadership for the prestigious Landon Lecture Series and coordinates special projects, working with the president, provost, and all university senior leaders. In addition, he collaborates with the KSU Foundation, K-State Alumni Association and K-State Athletics as strategic partners to the university.
Before joining K-State, Stewart served as chief engagement officer for the University of Missouri System and vice chancellor for extension and engagement for the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he served on the president's cabinet and collaborated with the executive leaders across the system, including the University of Missouri campus in Columbia, the University of Missouri-Kansas City, the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and Missouri S&T University. During his tenure, he elevated extension and engagement through strategic partnerships, listening and learning sessions, legislative relations, the establishment of an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Council, and a comprehensive renaming and rebranding effort. He facilitated the creation of an engagement framework that leveraged knowledge and expertise across the UM System universities to maximize the benefit and collective impact for the citizens of the state.
Prior to joining the University of Missouri system, Stewart held a variety of leadership roles with North Carolina State University. He served the university's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in strategic planning and college leadership roles, served as an associate director with North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service, and served as Head of the Department of 4-H Youth Development and Family & Consumer Sciences. He initially joined NC State as the state agricultural education coordinator and FFA advisor.
He has also served in a variety of roles associated with the Association of Public Land Grant Universities, Engagement Scholarship Consortium, National 4-H and FFA Organizations after starting his career as a high school agriculture teacher.
Stewart is Professor of Communications and Agricultural Education at Kansas State University. He earned his bachelor's degree in agricultural education, master's in agricultural education and doctorate in education with an emphasis in agricultural and extension education, all from North Carolina State University.
